You’re invited to the wedding of the season!

Award-winning film director Mira Nair brings her iconic, exuberant, sumptuous film Monsoon Wedding to life in a new musical adaptation set to light up the stage this fall.

East and West converge at the four-day wedding celebration of Delhi-born Aditi and New Jersey-raised Hemant. A south Delhi princess, Aditi has agreed to marry on the rebound from a disastrous affair, but her activist cousin Ria urges her to think beyond marriage. Hemant, the Ivy-league groom from New Jersey, has never felt at home in his own skin and is hoping to find an anchor with his new wife’s family.

As the lavish festivities get underway, Aditi’s bravery lands her into trouble, her father is in the thick of financial woe, Hemant is just as lost in the old world as in the new, and dark family secrets come to light. A Note From The Director

When I first made Monsoon Wedding almost 20 years ago I was struck by the juxtaposition of the ancient and modern In global india. Today, we see an enormous division and discrepancy between the rich and the poor, the old and the new, the traditional and the modern, the east and the west - and Monsoon Wedding remains as relevant as ever, which is why I am thrilled to bring it to the stage.

In Monsoon Wedding the Musical, a bride and groom cross oceans to meet, each having their own vision of what love should look like. The bride is searching for an ideal defined by her Delhi upbringing, the groom is yearning for a home between two lands. This is the beautiful collision at the heart of Monsoon Wedding the Musical, where old and new ways of loving crash into each other. I think of the musical as imbuing 5 kinds of love : “old shoe love” — the deep well of love between the parents of the bride that is reignited as they prepare their daughter for what is ahead of her. There is the love that is arranged but could ignite — the love between the groom and the bride. There is the love over a flower, the pure love of Alice and Dubey, the maid and the tent man. And finally there is the sick perversion of love that sadly has darkened so many families.

Monsoon Wedding the Musical is the story of a family that does not want to split, that does not want to break despite the vicissitudes of life. We tell this story with a combination of great truth and great fun. Fun is critical, but fun cannot mask darker things. We strive for a beautiful kind of balance between silence and music, darkness and real joy. At its foundation, our story is about love. We all yearn for that, don’t we? We all want to understand love. We want to recognize what love is and how we become a part of it. That is what I hope to create onstage—a feeling of masti, of a kind of intoxication with life. What family has not had their own hardships or experienced pain that could rip them apart? The key is to find the love at the center, and in Monsoon Wedding the Musical that love is our guiding principle and the reason we have created this piece.

It feels good to be making an antidepressant. The world certainly needs that right now!
